AFFILIATE CHURCHES

Anglican Communion Anglican Orthodox Church

BEGAN: The Anglican Church consists of a worldwide communion (fellowship) of churches which were officially formed during the 16th century Protestant Reformation movement. They are a stem from the Church of England which was established by the Augustine, Archbishop of Canterbury in 597 A.D., but were first called "Anglican" in 1851 A.D.

CHURCH GOVERNMENT: Anglican churches are constitutionally governed by legislative synods (council of church officials) that include archbishops, bishops, priests, deacons and lay members. The Diocese lay members elect their own bishops worldwide except for England, where their election is sovereign (by King with Parliament approval). Anglicans objected to papal (Pope) authority.

MAJOR DOCTRINAL EMPHASIS: Anglicans are highly ecclesiastical working vigorously for worldwide reunion of all Christian churches. They emphasize the Bible as the final source of doctrine "necessary to salvation." There is allowed a considerable latitude of interpretation. Acceptance of the "Apostles' Creed" as the Baptismal symbol, and the "Nicene Creed" as a statement of faith are emphasized. The Common Book of Prayer is used in worship services. The Church expects its members to be loyal to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Sacraments include Water Baptism of infants and adults by pouring and sprinkling, and The Lord's Supper wherein Jesus is present in the Bread and Wine. Anglicans are both evangelistic and missionary oriented.
